Kiplinger.com recently compiled a list of the top five cities to live in for young singles. The two most important criteria were affordable rental housing and ample entertainment opportunities – a high number of bars, restaurants and night spots per capita. Additionally, Kiplinger chose the following metro areas because they had a few common themes. These themes included a large “creative class” of scientists, architects, writers, artists and entertainers. Each area also demonstrated job growth and per capita income growth. Finally, tolerance and diversity were considered.
Current Employment Opportunities
- Washington D.C. – With many young, hip neighborhoods both in the city and in the nearby suburbs, many young professionals already call D.C. home. Not all of the job opportunities here are government or politics-based. Employment opportunities abound in the engineering and information technology professions. The area offers many diverse cultural opportunities and an active social life.
- Denver, Colorado – Outdoor recreation lovers flock to this beautiful city, where they can ski in the winter and kayak, hike or bike during the summer. Cultural and night life opportunities abound in this city, and career opportunities continue to grow.
- Austin, Texas – The Texas capital boasts a cost of living below the national average and many opportunities for food and fun. The diverse culture provides entertainment for the many young singles here.
- Raleigh, North Carolina – Nestled in the famous Research Triangle of North Carolina, Raleigh offers continued employment opportunities in a plethora of fields. Three universities in the area guarantee a hip, diverse night life and lots of recent college graduates.
- Lexington, Kentucky – The smallest city on the list, Lexington offers an entertaining night life for young singles while catering to those who want to live in an affordable area.

I think you have to go a bit further to find best city for singles…
I am living in Buenos Aires and it is truly remarkable. Young, fun and buzzing. I am also studying at a great Spanish language school and staying in a superb neighborhood in Palermo.
Perfect.
I relocated to denver last year expecting it to be permanent… so cold and soooo dry i bailed in less than 6 months! plus a sort of boring scene
Not surprised to see Denver on the list. I love that city and intend to move there. It’s beautiful, fun, and friendly. I could go on and on.
These all sound like great places, but my vote is for Nashville, TN. Pro sports teams (NFL & Ice Hockey). Very stable & diverse job market (Government, Manufacturing, Medical, Music and Education). Several colleges & universities. No harsh winters. Live music EVERY night of the week (not just Country, I prefer R&B, Blues and Jazz). Home to an endless number of singers & entertainers. People are very friendly and the cost of living is great (No State or Local Taxes, you can buy a 3000 sq ft house for under $200k). I frequent other cities in the area as well, within about a 3 hour drive I can hit Atlanta, Memphis, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Huntsville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington and St. Louis. And since Nashville is centrally located, with a 30 minutes flight I can be in Chicago or New Orleans.
Boston in my mind is the best city to live in. It was ranked as the #1 place for education, the best schools in the world are here (Harvard, MIT, Northeastern, Bentley, Wentworth, UMass, and the list is goes on…), also ranked #2 best cities to meet a man…Its also ranked high as one of the best places to raise a family.
Im recently located in the lower part of texas and plan to move to the east by the end of summer 2010. can anyone tell me which is a good place to go?
I live in Washington, DC area, and I’m enjoying it. I lived in Charlotte, NC for a few years, but moved back to DC. This is a great spot for singles. Alot of activities here.
