Cover Letter

The old maxim says you never get a second chance to make a first impression. If this holds true, a cover letter is a vital part of introducing yourself to potential employers. It paints a picture of who you are and what you’re all about. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when writing it:

  • Always include a cover letter with your resume.
  • Use high quality stationery and envelopes that match your resume.
  • Address your letter to a specific individual with the correct title and business address.
  • Avoid generic letters – customize each letter to the situation.
  • Say what you mean clearly and simply using the least number of words.
  • Limit your letter to one page.
  • Do not simply repeat the information included in your resume – expand on it.
  • Be enthusiastic and appreciative, but be honest.
  • Always check your grammar and spelling, and do not forget to sign the letter!

For additional cover letter writing assistance, try out these helpful sites:

  • College Grad Job Hunter illustrates different techniques and highlights the best and the worst uses of cover letters.
  • The book "200 Letters for Job Hunters" offers tips on organizing your thoughts, avoiding common mistakes and ending your letter in a compelling way. Their FAQ addresses tone, salutations and length.
  • The Career Services office at the University at Buffalo explains what should be included from top to bottom. Also includes models you can follow step by step.
  • JobStar offers sample cover letters for different situations.
  • CV Tips is dedicated to preparing a resume for an overseas employment search. Its cover letter suggestions are sound advice on either side of the ocean. The site recommends writing three paragraphs and walks you through what each should contain.
  • Jobweb helps you avoid a "cookie cutter" letter that fades in with the rest of the bunch.

Finished? Don’t forget to have the letter edited and proofread by a word-savvy friend or family member.
