Whether you are looking for your first summer job in high school or the entry-level job you will begin after graduating from college, there are many different ways to say “I need a job” to potential employers.
As with so many things in life, it is often not what you say but how you say it. To say “I need a job” and achieve the best results, there are several different things to consider. First, when conducting a job search you should always be professional. Second, when asked why you applied for a certain position by a potential employer or why you want to work for a particular company, the answer should never be “I need a job.” Potential employers think this reason, though honest, does not demonstrate any foresight or dedication to the unique position and company.
Essentially, bluntly stating “I need a job” will likely ruin your chances of getting what you need. It is therefore imperative to use one or more of the following suggestions as you navigate the hazards of job searching.
- Submit Your Resume
The easiest way to say “I need a job” is to submit a resume and cover letter to a hiring manager. This will signal that you are interested in the position. If a company you want to work for is not advertising any openings, you should submit your resume anyway. Sometimes companies do not advertise open positions or maybe you did not spot a company’s job posting. When you want to say “I need a job,” you can impress a hiring manager by taking initiative and submitting your information and employment history.
- Say Why you Are Looking for a Job
Another great way to say “I need a job” is to explain why you are looking for a position. This will say “I need a job” without actually saying it. For example, in a cover letter you could write that you recently graduated from college and you look forward to gaining experience and skills while working for company X as an entry-level X. Potential employers will read a cover letter like this and know that you want to work for them. They also know that you need a job, as you are a recent college graduate and most likely unemployed.
- State Your Objective
Certain types of resume styles still utilize the “Objective” heading where the job seeker states his or her desired occupation or goal. For example, if you want to say “I need a job” as a medical assistant you could state the following as your objective: To efficiently and qualitatively improve patient health by working as a medical assistant. This will get your point, “I need a job” across, without stating it as your objective.
- Express Interest in an Interview
Interviews can be very stressful, but you should never try to get your desire for a particular position across by leaping up and screaming “I need a job!” When asked why you want a particular job or to work for the hiring manager’s company, you should state two or three reasons why you think you would be a good fit. You can also state that you want the opportunity to apply your skills and improve production, for example. It is acceptable to state how interested you are in a position at the end of an interview, if you truly think you have found a job you would love.
- Network Through Friends or Colleagues
If you can’t say “I need a job” then get someone else to say it for you. For example, if you network with former colleagues to try and find a new job, they may pass on your situation without you having to. If you were laid off and are now looking for a new position you can suggest that contacts who find new employment opportunities for you to pursue could mention that. It may convey to potential employers that you are definitely interested in a long-term commitment with their company.
