ONE: Use your spell check or better yet...learn to spell!TWO: You is NOT spelled "u". Stop writing like a high school student texting your friends. A resume or cover memo is not the place for informality. If you expect to be treated professionally, act like a professional. THREE: You will never be "given" a job....you will earn it competitively among others. Do your homework on the company, the position and be prepared to discuss how your SKILLS apply to the open position. NEVER state that you "need" or are "looking for a job" to a potential employer. Employers are looking for what YOU can do for THEM...not vice versa. Be able to explain why you want to work there as opposed to another place.....what is unique about the company or job? Finally, be able to respond to the "Tell me about yourself" request. Put together and rehearse a 30 second summary about yourself and be ready to deliver it. For most of the jobs that are available to high school students, employers are looking for employees who are: 1. punctual (gets to work for their shift early and ready to work) and don't miss work 2. have a good work ethic (actually works when they're supposed to and doesn't text their friends when they should be working) 3. follow directions, and ask good questions when they're unsure about what to do 4. are honest 5. has good communication skill (no swearing, doesn't call everyone "dude.) 6. has a moderate personal appearance Volunteer experience, playing on sports teams, and good grades usually address the first three items listed.
