Labor Online – Union Labor – Labor Day

Labor Online.

Today, most Americans view Labor Day as the last chance to take a dip in the pool, a great excuse to barbecue with friends or a farewell to summer. But in 1894, when Labor Day was declared a legal holiday, the day was a celebration of the working class. Stories are mixed on who actually established the holiday. A sampling of Labor Day history sites follow:

  • Department of Labor
Who founded Labor Day? The DOL tells the story of potential founders.
  • PBS
An older, but still relevant segment from PBS details the origins of Labor Day.
  • About.com: Labor Day Links
