How to pick up extra cash this season
Thinking about finding a seasonal job to pick up some extra cash? Many companies are desperate for extra help based on the time of year. Retailers, for example, need sales clerks for the busy holiday shopping season.
Seasonal jobs are temporary, often part-time and generally provide no benefits. However, many hard-working employees are invited to stay on if permanent positions become available. Some seasonal jobs are full-time for a defined period, like working at a ski resort during ski season. The links below should get you started on a seasonal job search:
Current Employment Opportunities
Check the Classifieds
One place to look for seasonal work is in the classifieds section of your local newspaper. This is a good source for retail jobs, and you may also find opportunities not advertised elsewhere, like work at a Christmas Tree farm. You can find you local newspaper at HeadlineSpot.com
Work Where Others Play
Cool Works lists seasonal jobs in National Parks, ski resorts, cruise ships and beyond. Job Monkey is similar, but also has sections for airline and resort jobs. SkiJobs.net highlights jobs in ski resorts as well as other hospitality industries in Europe and North America. If you live in a warm climate, don’t forget that winter can be a busy tourist season.
Start Shipping
Do you ship presents to family and friends during the holidays? So does everyone else. UPS alone hires tens of thousands of extra employees each December. Also visit the employment sites of Federal Express and the U.S. Postal Service.
Pick Up a Shovel
Younger workers can make good money shoveling snow or babysitting during the winter months. (Rates go up for holiday parties and New Year’s Eve, right?)
Try the Agencies
Employment agencies can also lead you to temporary opportunities. Many companies turn to them to fill seasonal needs. Try these industry leaders: Manpower, OfficeTeam and Spherion.
