Stock Market Schedule

Stock market closings and jobs in the securities industry

The end of the year is finally coming to a close, but before the New Year’s countdown to 2008, some of you may be wondering about the stock market schedule.  The stock market schedule for the last days of 2008 and the stock market schedule for the upcoming year of 2009 follows all of the federal holidays, except for Veteran’s Day.  Remember that while you are busy preparing for New Year’s parties or heading off to see the Times Square Ball, securities brokers and traders are still hard at work on New Year’s Eve.  Thankfully, investors will get some rest on the first day of the year when the stock market is closed on New Years Day.  Here is the 2009 stock market schedule for the New Year:

NYSE Stock Market Schedule 2009:

Current Investment Employment Opportunities

The New York Stock Exchange operates Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day of the year, except for those days listed in the NYSE stock market schedule below.  Most of the other stock exchanges in the United States follow the same schedule as the NYSE, so this can be thought of as a general stock market schedule.

Holiday Date
New Year’s Day January 1
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day January 19
Presidents Day February 16
Good Friday April 10
Memorial Day May 25
Independence Day July 3
Labor Day September 7
Thanksgiving Day November 26
Christmas December 25

Early Closings for the NYSE stock market schedule:

  • Friday, November 27, 2009 (1:00 p.m.)
  • Thursday, December 24, 2009 (1:00 p.m.)

When any of the above holidays listed in the stock market schedule above fall on a Saturday, the Exchange will not be open the preceding Friday.  Similarly, when a holiday falls on a Sunday, the Exchange will not be open the following Monday.

NASDAQ Stock Market Schedule 2009:

The NASDAQ follows all of the same holidays as the NYSE stock market schedule listed above.  In addition to closing early on November 27 and December 24, the NASDAQ also closes early on Thursday, July 2, 2009.  Like the NYSE, the NASDAQ operates Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:00 p.m., except for the days when the market is closed, as noted in the above NYSE stock market schedule.  The NASDAQ stock market schedule also has pre-market trading hours from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and after-market trading hours from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

NASDAQ OMX PHLX (Philadelphia Stock Exchange) Stock Market Schedule 2009:

In July 2008, the NASDAQ completed its acquisition of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, creating the NASDAQ OMX PHLX.  The Philadelphia Stock Exchange stock market schedule also includes the same nine holidays in the NYSE stock market schedule; however, there are also some additional days where the market closes early.  The Philadelphia Stock Exchange operates on regular hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with pre- and post-market sessions beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m.  Keep in mind that this stock market schedule may be subject to change due to the acquisition.

Possible Early Closures in the Philadelphia Stock Market Schedule (1:00 p.m.):

  • Friday, January 16, 2009
  • Friday, February 13, 2009
  • Thursday, July 2, 2009
  • Friday, November 27, 2009
  • Thursday, December 4, 2009

Other 2009 Stock Market Schedules:

The AMEX stock market schedule (American Stock Exchange), CBOE stock market schedule (Chicago Board of Options Exchange), Chicago Stock Exchange stock market schedule, and Pacific Exchange stock market schedule all follow the same nine holidays that are included in the NYSE stock market schedule.

Jobs in the Stock Market:

The stock market schedule listed above shows holidays and a typical 9-5 workweek, with the possibility of additional before- and after-market trading hours.  Thus, traders follow the stock market schedule and usually work a little over 40 hours a week.  However, many other jobs that involve securities, such as investment banking, require evening and weekend work outside of the trading hours.  To offset the long hours, many careers in finance are some of the highest paying jobs available.  For example, securities salespeople and traders usually enjoy salaries of over $100,000.  Summer interns at a major investment banking firm can earn as much as $2,000 per week, so you can probably imagine the hefty salary of a full-time, experienced investment banker.  Here are some great jobs in finance, investing, and the stock market:

Please provide a by month total for year 2009 of days the NYSE will be open. Such a file was on the NYSE web site as tradeday08.pdf and was to be updated to reflect the current year which will likely not be available for tommorrow (2-Jan-09) when the exchange is to open. Thanks

The Nasdaq will not close early on July 2 (Tuesday) 2009, since July 2 is a Thursday. This did answer my query though whether it would close early the day before July 3rd on Friday.

[Editors note: Thanks for the heads up Jeff]
