Curriculum/Training Specialist A lot of people fail to realize that teaching is not the only job available in education.  One of the top jobs for 2008 is a curriculum specialist.  These individuals work to improve the quality of education in a school through developing the curriculum, selecting textbooks, training teachers and assessing current educational practices.  Because of new standards for education, employment in this field is expected to grow much faster than average in the next eight years.  Furthermore, it is pretty safe to say that most careers in education are recession-proof because there will always be a need for schools.  If you are interested in this career, consider starting out as a teacher to gain some experience and earning your master’s degree.  With this, you will be well on your way to a rewarding career with a $63,200/year average salary.

Engineer One of the great things about an engineering career is that there are many options available.  Whether you are interested in computer engineering, electrical engineering or mechanical engineering (just to name a few), there are countless job opportunities in this field.  If you are looking for an engineering job that is recession-proof, consider an a career in the energy industry, like nuclear engineering, or in the environmental sector, like environmental engineering. The average salary for engineers is $90,900.

Government Manager In the year 2008 alone, the federal government is expected to hire about 200,000 new employees.  One popular government job that made the top jobs for 2008 list is government manager.  Government manager positions may include management jobs in finance, technology, human resources or research.  With a job in government, you do not have to worry about offshoring, not to mention the fact that the government will never go out of business.  Government manager jobs have an average salary of $97,900, which is one of the highest of all the jobs on our top jobs for 2008 list.

Landscape Architect There is a lot more to landscape architecture than designing backyards for suburban neighborhoods.  Landscape architects design anything from college campuses, public parks, golf courses and shopping centers.  As a landscape architect, you may also be involved in restoration of wetlands, mined areas and forested lands, or you may have projects in street and highway beautification. In this career, you will work closely with individuals in many different fields, such as civil engineers, architects, and hydrologists. This also offers opportunities for self-employment, which is very appealing to those of you who want to be in charge of your own hours and projects.  A bachelor’s or master’s degree is usually required in this field and the average salary is $64,200.

Physician Assistant Numerous jobs in healthcare made the list of top jobs for 2008, and physician assistant is no exception.  Physician assistants (PAs) receive formal training and have the authority to be involved in many of the same tasks as doctors, including examining and treating patients, conducting laboratory tests, treating minor injuries and prescribing some medications.  Furthermore, instead of the lengthy med school requirements to be a doctor, a PA will only need 3 years of additional schooling after receiving his or her bachelor’s degree.  Physician assistant salaries average at $83,800.  Other top jobs for 2008 in the healthcare industry include registered nurse, optometrist, dentist and pharmacist.
