Don’t Freeze in the Interview

Q: I freeze during interviews. Every time I leave an interview, it is always with a feeling of dread that I could have done much better. Needless to say, I haven’t received any job offers lately. What am I doing wrong?

A: An interview is a big event?a stressful and traumatic one. It ranks right up with having a root canal for most people, so being apprehensive and tense is to be expected. However, following a few simple steps will help you conquer your fears and ace the interview.

Current Employment Opportunities

Come prepared to the interview. Being prepared leads to confidence. Research the company you will be interviewing with. What products or services do they provide their customers? What industry trends have been occurring? Has the company had any major expansions or changes recently? The more information you can gather about the employer, the better prepared you will be.

Become comfortable with the interview process by having mock interviews with a friend. Videotape the interviews if possible to pinpoint and improve any weaknesses in your delivery.

If you are prepared and comfortable with the interview process, it will give you the confidence you need to impress upon the employer your many strengths and skills.
