Six of the ten fastest-growing occupations are in health care, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and employment in this industry is projected to reach 12.6 million.


An aging baby boomer population and extended lifespan have fueled demand for health care workers, including home health aides, medical assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, medical records technicians, registered nurses and speech-language pathologists.

With an average annual salary of $124,800, physicians and surgeons top the list of highest paying occupations. Workers who acquire the necessary education, training, and credentials (licenses are required for many health care occupations) face excellent opportunities for advancement in this field.
