Job Description
Under the supervision of a Project Manager, performs routine bridge inspections in accordance with the FHWA Bridge Inspector’s Training Manual 90. Job Duties - Inspects and appraises bridges - Acts as lead worker and schedules work of other technical personnel - May rate load-carrying capacities of bridges including appraisals - Assists with structural analyses to determine load-carrying capacity of bridges - Maintains inspection equipment - Prepares and/or records data for bridge inspection files - Prepares, reviews, and evaluates inspection records for routine bridge inspections - progress and quality
Job Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. Has a minimum of five years experience in bridge inspection assignments and has completed a comprehensive training course based on the FHWA Bridge Inspector’s Training Manual 90, or has certification as a Level III or Level IV Bridge Safety Inspector under the National Society of Professional Engineer’s program for National Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) program. Special Skills - Ability to perform engineering calculations. - Knowledge of bridge engineering fundamentals and application of engineering theory. - Ability to analyze, interpret, and review technical data. - Ability to use a personal computer along with applicable software. - Knowledge of all types of bridge construction methods, particularly in Texas. - Knowledge of current and past AASHTO specifications, TxDOT design procedures, bridge standards, and details. - Ability to exercise initiative and independent engineering judgment. - Ability to schedule and lead the work of others when appropriate to the position. - Ability to communicate effectively and maintain proper working relationships. Other requirements typically include: ability to walk long distances, climb ladders, stoop, squat and crawl under bridges; ability to observe construction activities and distinguish colors; and ability to perceive back-up alarms and other warnings. Must be able to work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions, subject to insects, flooded terrain and equipment/traffic hazards. Incumbent must have valid driver's license and good driving record.
