Position Description Position: Director of Education and Training, RN
Department: Nursing
REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Staff Development Coordinator functions in a variety of settings to develop and maintain the competency of nursing staff to care for residents/patients of various adult ages and needs. The Staff Development Coordinator assesses the learning needs of staff, plans and implements programs to meet these needs and evaluates the outcomes. Contributes to implementation of and adherence to federal and state regulations and follows all Extendicare policies and procedures.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: The responsibilities of this position involve significant physical activities including standing, lifting (up to 60 pounds unassisted), bending, stooping, twisting, pushing and pulling. Tasks marked with an asterisk (*) are those that regularly require these physical activities. All employees of nursing homes may be required to provide lifting and transfer assistance to residents/patients. Lifting and/or transferring some residents/patients will require use of a lifting device and/or assistance of other staff.

Essential Functions
1. *Plans, schedules and implements general orientation for all new employees.

2. *Provides orientation to all employees using the appropriate materials.

3. Schedules orientation programs as necessary.

4. *Plans, coordinates, schedules and presents in-services for all departments (mandatory, voluntary and identified needs).

5. Coordinates, implements and maintains records of all in-servicing for all staff.

6. Coordinates employee health programs and maintains employee records.

7. *Recruits, hires & trains employees as requested.

8. *Teaches state approved nursing assistant course, where applicable..
        � If an LPN provides this training the function is supervised by
          an RN according to state requirements.

9. Coordinates the use of educational equipment and resources 

10.*Shares �on call� status with other facility nursing managers.

11.*Performs other staff education duties as required or directed for compliance with State, Federal, and JACHO Regulations.

12.Prepares supplementary education materials as required.

13.*Assesses the learning needs of the staff through direct observation, formal learning assessments and indirectly through review of quality improvement and/or program evaluation.

14.Measures the impact of programs and learning activities on staff.

15.Treats all residents, visitors, and staff with courtesy.

16.*Attends and participates in in-service training, performance improvement (�PI�) committees and other meetings as scheduled and directed.

17.Works overtime, holiday and weekend hours as scheduled.

18.Assists in orientation and training of employees as assigned.

19.Safety
� Know and follow facility rules.
� Demonstrate proper use of equipment. Report equipment needs or repairs.
� Follow facility smoking policies.
� Report and document any incidents or accidents of residents, staff or visitors to the appropriate facility personnel.
� *Perform duties, which may include transportation of residents, as assigned in Facility Disaster Plan.
� Use required protective equipment.
� Follow infection control standards, policies and procedures.
� Reports all hazardous conditions/equipment to Supervisor.

20.Resident Rights
� Knows Resident Rights. Helps the residents exercise and/or protect their rights.
� Reports resident complaints to management. 
  Maintains confidentiality of resident information.

21.HIPAA
� Follows and adheres to Extendicare�s policies and procedures implementing HIPAA requirements for the privacy and security of protected health information.
� Uses and/or discloses only minimum amount of Protected Health Information necessary to complete assigned tasks. (Applies only if position requires access to PHI under Role Based Access Grid.)
� Reports all suspected violation of company�s HIPAA policies or procedures to Facility Privacy Designee.

22.*Complies with all laws and regulations applicable to position and acts in accordance with Extendicare Health Services, Inc., Corporate Compliance Program.

23.*Performs physical activities including standing, lifting (up to 60 pounds unassisted), bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and twisting.

24.Follows facility dress and hygiene policies.

25.Participates in the Interdisciplinary Plan of Care (�IPOC�) process as assigned.

Other Duties
1. *Performs other duties as directed by facility management.
2. *Participates in all-hands dining.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
1. Currently licensed in the State as a Registered Nurse.
2. Working knowledge of MDS, RAP and trigger system, care plan development and chart auditing of the nursing process.
3. Strong oral and written communication and teaching skills.
4. Strong organizational and time management skills.
5. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
6. Meets all health requirements imposed by law. 
7. Ability to relate positively, effectively and appropriately with
resident, families, community members, volunteers and other facility staff.

8. Must have current CPR certification.
