Position Description:
Morgan Stanley is seeking a strong Executive Director for its Operational Risk Management Team. The eventual hire will lead a Client Relationship Management team that is responsible for working with several of the Firm’s Business Units or Infrastructure areas to ensure Operational Risk objectives are being met.

Morgan Stanley’s Operational Risk Department has established an Operational Risk program and framework across the Firm to:

  • Assist in embedding an Operational Risk culture throughout the Firm to promote transparency and disclosure
  • Promote best practices to assist Business Lines in the management of Operational Risk
  • Ensure that requirements of investors, senior management and regulators are adequately met
  • Report to Board and Senior Management on operational risk issues

    Key focus areas in this role will be:
  • Ensure proper execution of the Operational Risk program and embedding of the framework and standards.
  • Manage client relationship staff to ensure their development of solid Client relationships with their assigned coverage areas.
  • Build a solid Client relationship with own assigned coverage area resulting in on-going two way flow of communication and comprehensive understanding of area’s overall Operational Risk well being, key issues, etc.
  • Support the Firm’s Governance Program

    The candidate will partner with clients to co-ordinate specific framework components, such as:

  • Operational Risk Reporting
  • Recording and mitigating Operational Risk loss incidents
  • Key Indicators
  • Risk and Control Self Assessments (RCSA)

    It is expected that the candidate will form strong networks across the Firm in order to understand and contextualize key Operational Risks in consolidated reporting to the Board and senior management.

    Candidates will have:

  • Excellent communication skills, as the role involves a high amount of interaction with senior management and other project team members.
  • Good organization and time management skills and the ability to prioritize effectively and meet deadlines.
  • An in depth understanding sense of risk management, including reporting, and familiarity with recent regulation (e.g. Basel II, Sarbanes Oxley, etc.)
  • Broad based financial services experience; preferably in an investment bank with sales & trading, finance, operations, technology or internal audit background.

    For the coverage component of the role the individual must:
  • Have experience working with ambiguity, managing staff through and resolving complex issues
  • Have a history of being able to articulate a clear message for which support is garnered
  • Have the ability to influence on senior level, while also being skilled at extracting requirements from subject matter experts in designated businesses

    Skills Required:
  • Guardianship
    The role is based around risk, and as such a strong focus on the control environment is essential.
    Client Skills
    The candidate will need to be able to interact comfortably with senior management, articulate issues clearly and succinctly and to challenge existing views.
  • Business/Product Knowledge:
    A sophisticated understanding of financial processes is expected in order to be able to determine their impact on risk and control.
  • Organizational Ability
    Candidates should be able to coordinate several parallel objectives while responding to ad hoc requests. Flexibility is a key element, as is the ability to understand and react to changes in senior management’s priorities.
  • Communication
    The role will involve meeting with senior management within Infrastructure; experience of presenting, facilitating and gaining consensus are required.
  • Teamwork
    The role will require working with other colleagues and creating networks with external consultancies.
  • Management Ability
    The candidate will be responsible to manage staff members and their work-streams
  • Leadership
    Candidates need to be able to demonstrate the ability to take ideas forward and to challenge others where appropriate. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate the ability to act with integrity, and maturity.
