Job Description

The National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago is seeking experienced Field Managers to lead teams of Field Interviewers on data collection projects. Positions are available nation-wide.

Responsibilities include: Managing a team of Field Interviewers (usually 6-18 depending on project requirements) on an assigned project. The Field Manager (FM) is also responsible for all project field data collection tasks within a geographical region during the data collection for the project. In addition, FM's are often called upon to assist with interviewer recruiting tasks, training (both in person and on the telephone), writing and reviewing project materials, lead troubleshooting teams, mentoring of the interviewing staff and other relevant tasks as directed by the Regional Manager.

This position reports administratively to a Regional Manager (RM). While working on a project, the Field Manager will report to a Field Project Manager (FPM) or the project's Data Collection Task Leader.

It is understood that a Field Manager may not work for a direct competitor during the time they are managing a project for NORC as a regular status employee.


Job Requirements

High school diploma required; college degree in social sciences or related field preferred; A minimum of two years experience in social science research needed.

The ideal candidate will have:


  • Strong interpersonal communication skills both in person and on the telephone;
  • Basic knowledge of the principles, processes, and methods of survey research through experience in the field;
  • Basic understanding of field sampling procedures;
  • Strong skills in Field interviewing, locating, gaining cooperation, refusal conversion, securing institutional cooperation and making plans for staff that will travel;
  • Strong skills in problem and conflict resolution and the ability to handle multiple, conflicting responsibilities;
  • Skills in the use of computer software, including Microsoft Office, survey programs and a case management system - candidates must have access to high speed internet in their home office;
  • Ability to quickly grasp new computer systems;
  • Strong supervisory knowledge and skills;
  • Ability to evaluate cost and production data and take appropriate action when necessary;
  • Ability to conduct case by case reviews and offer solutions during field period;
  • Strong skills in time management, personal organization, and setting of priorities to meet all project needs in a timely fashion.
