Medical Laboratory Technician/ MLT/ Lab Technician- Cord Blood
South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is seeking a
Cord Blood Laboratory Technician
for our Cord Blood department
at our San Antonio location.

Position Summary:
Responsible to perform and assist in coordination of all operational aspects of the cord blood testing and processing areas. Ensures all laboratory procedures are conducted in compliance with prescribed regulations. Maintains all technical activities to include training and the performance of high complexity, routine laboratory procedures.
Responsibilities / Expectations for the Medical Laboratory Technician / Lab Technician-Cord Blood include:
- Perform laboratory testing through performance of high complexity, routine, and special laboratory procedures.
- Perform cord blood accessioning, testing, processing, and maintain quality control records within compliance.
- Monitor incoming samples for testing and ensure that integrity of the sample is maintained (i.e. temperature, timing, etc).
- Perform processing, analytical testing, packaging and labeling of cord blood product, associated cord blood sample(s), PBSC product(s) and PBSC associated sample(s), according to procedures of NMDP, AABB, FACT, FDA, ISO, FDA, STBTC, QualTex and cGMP standards as needed.
- When necessary, be able to transport cord blood to include cord blood/ PBSC samples to and/ or from hospital to South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.
- Assist in the preparation of daily activity reports related to processing, resolution of discrepancies, and retention of products not qualified for release.
- Assist with training of new employees as needed and maintain annual training competencies for the testing laboratory.
- Recognize unusual results and difficulties encountered in all phases of laboratory performance to include purchased goods, environmental, mechanical and product related.
- Assist and develop testing procedures according to the NMDP, AABB, FACT, ISO, FDA, STBTC, QualTex and cGMP standards.
- Assist with validation of all procedures performed thus providing for the safety and efficacy of products to include preventative maintenance.
- Maintain a close working relationship with management keeping them informed on issues pertaining to TCBB laboratory functions.
Schedule: Part Time 4-6 hours a day, 3-5 days a week including Saturday

Job Requirements
Requirements of Medical Laboratory Technician / Lab Technician - Cord Blood include:
- Must be competent in all aspects of technical procedures of a clinical laboratory.
- Must have a working knowledge of equipment and procedures for various technologies.
- Must recognize unusual results and troubleshoot testing problems as soon as detected.
- Must be prepared to determine the best course of action when circumstances require.
- Must maintain a knowledge of and perform within the guidelines of all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.
Education / Qualifications:
- Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent preferred
Knowledge / Experience:
- Two years laboratory experience, equipment validation, quality control, and hematology experience preferred.
- Must be at least 21 years old with good driving record.
- Three years driving experience required.
Licensure / Certifications:
- MLT (ASCP) or equivalent or within one year of certification eligibility
- Texas Driver's License
