Job Description

GEO Care, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of The GEO Group, Inc. GEO is a premier provider of behavioral healthcare and other special needs services to state and local government agencies including management and treatment services for forensic and civil mental health hospitals, long-term care and geriatric centers, sex offender and other special needs facilities.

 

Columbia Regional Care Center in Columbia, South Carolina is managed and operated by GEO Care and is fully licensed and accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC).  Columbia Regional Care Center offers 374 beds providing sub-acute, skilled intermediate and hospice care for conditions such as AIDS, cancer, cardiac disease, dialysis, life support, mental health treatment and special needs programs.

 

This position is responsible for directing, assessing, planning, and monitoring all medical services and staff for the facility.  In addition, it is also responsible for assuring that all medical assessments and care of residents are performed as well providing consultations and referrals to and from other medical staff.

 

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directs the overall staff functions and policies for medical, psychiatric, dental, and laboratory functions at the facility and meets with facility executive management team for purposes of healthcare program evaluation and planning.  Assumes complete management and authority of all positions reporting directly in these areas.  Ensures the continuous performance improvement practices as they impact the assigned functional areas.   
  • Ensures effective management of all case reviews according to organizational and National Treatment Guidelines, standards and guidelines.
  • Directs and manages the overall medical care for the facility and serves as chairperson on a variety of committees as they impact the facility’s health care services. Actively participates in the Admission Treatment Planning program.  Provides back-up on-call duties for the physicians and may perform medical examinations. Co-signs all voice and telephone orders given by incumbent to ARNP’s if required and to nursing staff.
  • Ensures that staff receives continual training and may provide in-service training as needed to other departments.   
  • May conduct minor surgical procedures including, but not limited to, sutures, incisions and drainages, IV placements, and other procedures for which the physician is privileged.   
  • Routinely reviews and reevaluates residents requiring ongoing medical and consultative services and coordinates treatment planning in those cases.
  • Initiates and maintains compliance with organizational polices and procedures.  Reviews all facility-specific medical health care policies and procedures annually to assure their compliance with National Commission on Correctional Health Care standards and other applicable standards.
  • Chairs healthcare staff meetings and attends continuous quality improvement meetings, infection control meetings, and other meetings as requested by the Facility Administrator.
  • In coordination with the Facility Administrator and other management staff, designates continuing care facilities (to include hospitals) and specialty (consultative) physicians and makes referrals to these facilities or individuals as medically necessary.
  • Actively participates in utilization management initiatives, to include compliance with the formulary and non-emergency specialty consultative referral process. 
  • Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with/sensitive to the age and life span developmental needs of each person served. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 


Job Requirements

  • Medical degree from an accredited university.  Board certified or eligible in internal or family medicine.
  • At least four (4) years post residency clinical experience in an acute inpatient medical or  correctional experience preferred. 
  • Licensed in the state of South Carolina.   Has a current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate of registration. 
  • Must maintain a current copy of licensure and certifications on file in the facility at all times. Skilled in organization, supervision, and state-of-the-art treatment interventions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and compliance with special precautions, disaster and fire safety procedures.  
  • Is knowledgeable about care and treatment needs of patients with complicated medical problems.
