Registered Nurse - Perioperative
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Registered Nurse provides nursing care to patients in compliance with, but not limited to, Standards of Practice as defined by ANA, AORN, ASPAN and State Practice Act Standards, and organization protocols, policies, procedures, and guidelines. Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises plan of care based on physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs of the patient/caregiver. Maintains clinical knowledge and skills competencies to facilitate patient care in accordance with current standards of practice and monitors the environment to provide safe patient care.

POSITION REPORTS TO: Clinical Coordinator, Administrator
POSITION SUPERVISES: Surgical Technicians and Ancillary Nursing Staff

Demonstrates cooperative work attitude toward and with employees, physicians, management, patients, families, visitors, contract service providers and vendors. Consistently interacts in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative and professional.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITON:
1. Performs comprehensive assessment of patient’s clinical condition and psychosocial needs inclusive of caregiver needs during the perioperative period.
2. Observes behavioral and physiologic changes due to medications; takes appropriate action and documents.
3. Demonstrates knowledge of drugs, actions, and side effects of medications administered. 4. Protects patient’s right to privacy.
5. Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurances as appropriate
6. Communicates clearly and concisely, assessment and reassessment of the patient in charting and with notification of surgeon and/or anesthesiologist as necessary; collaborates with all other health-care personnel and physicians in the delivery of coordinated patient care. 7. Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurances as appropriate.
8. Assesses patient’s physical and emotional response(s) to treatment(s); observes behavioral and physiologic changes due to medications, takes appropriate action, and documents interventions and response to interventions.
9. Educates patient/caregiver regarding the perioperative experience; Coordinates and supervised teaching and education to the patient and caregiver.
10. Implements plan of care safely and effectively; provides safe environment.
11. Maintains clinical skill competencies appropriate to areas of specialty.
12. Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic drugs, actions, and side-effects.
13. Communicates relevant information to appropriate members of the health care team.
14. Consistently, accurately, and legibly completes documentation in timely manner.
15. Prepares unit for subsequent patients.
16. Counts narcotics at beginning and end of al shifts with another RN per facility policy.
17. Attends all mandatory in-services and required staff meetings.
18. Recognizes own limitations and seeks assistance and acquires sufficient information necessary to function effectively in assigned setting.
19. Integrates cost-effective measures into practice.
20. Participates in unit based QI programs as assigned.
21. Provides comprehensive care according to patient’s age and stage of growth and development: Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and/or Geriatric.
22. Demonstrates ability to function independently; demonstrates ability to multi-task.
23. Cross trains to minimum of two clinical areas.
24. Performs other duties as may be appropriately required or assigned.

ATTENDANCE
Excellent attendance required. Is willing to work extra hours as needed.
MACHINES / EQUIPMENT USED
Clinical equipment used for patient care, including, but not limited to, EKG monitor, defibrillator, suction equipment, stretchers, blanket and fluid warmers. Office equipment, i.e. computers, copy machines, telephones, public address system, postage machine and fax machine.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
1. Works in well-lighted and ventilated climate controlled environment with complicated equipment, some equipment with moving mechanical parts. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.
2. May be exposed to patients who have communicable diseases. With proper techniques, this risk should be minimized.
3. May have occasional exposure to blood borne and airborne disease pathogens. With proper techniques, this risk should be minimized.
4. May be exposed to anesthesia gases/agents, fumes or airborne particles.
5. Risk of radiation exposure with radiology equipment. 6. May be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
7. Quiet to moderate noise levels. Must be able to hear alarms on equipment, patient call-alarms, patient calls, over-head pages and instructions from physicians or staff.
Job Requirements
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS: Current license to practice as a registered nurse in NEW YORK. Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (if applicable for patient population) within 6 months of hire if not currently certified.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Prefer perioperative outpatient recovery experience; must exhibit good communication skills.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be able to provide proof of identity and their right to work in the United States.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Requires extensive mobility: walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
- Pushing, pulling, and lifting of equipment and/or patients.
- Requires mental alertness and accuracy for decision making.
- Requires ability to speak, hear, and to identify and distinguish colors.
- Use of hands to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture, size and shape.
- Repetitive motion required for extensive use of computers.
- Good visual acuity.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – PRE –OPERATIVE ANESTHESIA ASSESSMENT
- Knowledge of current trends and developments in preoperative nursing
- Knowledge of procedures and practices performed in the pre-operative, operating room and post operative are of the facility
- Knowledge of nursing practice to include medication administration and side effects, interpretation of laboratory values, and principals of patient teaching.
- Communicates clearly and concisely, assessment and reassessment of the patient in charting with notification of surgeon or anesthesiologist as necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – PRE-OPERATIVE CARE AREA
1. Ensures patient readiness for surgery including, but not limited to, NPO status, medication administration, surgical site verification and marking and chart completeness.
2. Maintains clinical skill competencies and appropriate to area of specialty including but not limited to CLIA waived testing, IV starts, medication administration and use of monitoring equipment
3. Ensures preoperative admitting bays are setup and ready for patients at all times, prepares patient charts for subsequent days, verifies patient arrival times and surgical procedures times based on daily surgery schedule
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – OPERATING ROOM
1. Ensures patient readiness for surgery including, but not limited to, NPO status, medication administration, surgical site verification and marking and chart completeness.
2. Implements plan of care safely and effectively and provides safe environment, including, but not limited to:
a. Positioning patient safely, padding bony prominences and ensuring respiratory and circulatory protection
b. Ensuring correct prepping and draping procedures
c. Conducting “time-out" process prior to incision to ensure correct patient, correct, procedures, and correct surgical site.
d. Ensuring asepsis during all procedures. Opens and presents sterile items to sterile field aseptically; ensures supplies are not expired.
