Summary of Position:
Actively participate on teams to lead the assessment and prioritization of packaging functional and aesthetic requirements from concept to implementation (50%). Insure optimal and accurate parameters are provided for projects early on to guide development and aid in critical decisions, particularly make vs buy analysis. Develop creative and functional packaging prototypes. Insure functionality of packaging concepts through testing and analysis. Lead cost saving and continuous improvements efforts in packaging across all categories (30%). Generate and implement innovations in packaging across all categories. Research and introduce new packaging ideas and technologies. Support APM process. Manage costs through effective engineering. Provide technical mentoring and training to Packaging Engineer incumbent (20%).
Authority:
The Packaging Engineer is empowered to make decisions regarding:
- Packaging design and development of all packaging components and finished good items, both make and finish complete.
- Assignment of packaging design projects to appropriate supplier(s).
- Assignment of projects to packaging intern as well as overall workload and prioritization of intern activities.
- Staffing packaging department with packaging intern. Hiring and performance evaluations of packaging intern.
Responsibility:
The Packaging Engineer shall bear final responsibility for the following areas:
- Development and maintenance of product specifications.
- Develop and maintain packaging test procedures.
- Completion and accuracy of all packaging related documentation internally and externally.
- Writing trial and test reports.
- Monitoring, and in some cases, leading cost savings projects and supporting with appropriate documentation.
- Initiating and managing supplier relationships in conjunction with Strategic Sourcing efforts.
- Cultivation of Henkel Consumer Adhesives' culture and values by promoting communication, teamwork and the respectful treatment of all individuals.
Essential Duties:
- Act as a primary professional and technical resource for any technical packaging related issues.
- Design packaging that is optimal for manufacture by participating in the labor quoting process. Ongoing and regular communication with manufacturing is required.
- Generate innovations and new technologies in packaging for supported product lines.
- Identify and implement cost savings and continuous improvement initiatives across all categories by working closely with manufacturing and suppliers to identify areas of opportunity for engineering improvements.
- Develop skill set based on individual needs for growth as well as areas of skill critical to our organization.
- Support management of supplier base through benchmarking and evaluations against competitors and innovations in the industry.
- Develop packaging specifications for internal customers.
- Track and communicate projects weekly through project tracking list.
- Support the development and maintenance of critical packaging documents, to be defined by Manager.
- Work to develop goals, objectives, and an individual career plan with Manager. Document on company preferred forms. Continuously review goals and objectives with Manager.Maintain an open communication style with internal and external customers.
- Mentor and share knowledge and experience with others in the packaging group and organization. Maintain industry contacts and connections. Take a supporting leadership role with regard to packaging technical expertise.
- Champion the role of packaging to help HCA achieve business objectives.
- Provide full packaging support for our Canadian facility.
- Maintain packaging testing lab and develop standards for testing at HCA.
- Monitoring packaging quality and solving packaging related issues.
Performance Measurements:
- Number of projects that are completed based on official due dates or immediate needs of the business or specific needs of an individual.
- Cost savings in terms of dollars saved and/or proactive effort towards researching potential cost savings opportunities.
- Ability to design packaging that accounts for maximum protection and/or structural integrity while minimizing costs.
- Effective communication and ability to support Packaging Engineers and Intern with direction in their daily activities and departmental goals.
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in packaging engineering, including the successful completion of an internship.
- Minimum of 5 years industry experience working as a Packaging Engineer or Senior Engineer.
- Excellent analytical, technical, and organizational skills required.
- Good interpersonal skills required. Ability to build strong relationships with customers,
- Working knowledge of most packaging materials. Experience with automated and semi automated packaging equipment a plus.
- Some lifting is required. (<35 lbs)
- Must be able to spend time in a manufacturing environment.
- Some travel required. (10-20%)
