Job Description

Reporting to the Underwriting Manager, the Underwriting Analyst performs detailed analysis of Underwriting functions, including rating, procedures, and underwriting policy, and provides guidance to department on implementation.

The Underwriting Analyst develops, produces and delivers reports for rating analysis by management staff, including preliminary analysis of results in both written and verbal form. Analyzes rating components for all coverages, including classification, exposure development, risk-to-rate evaluation and loss analysis and produces related quality assurance reports. Provides ongoing quality assurance queries and reports for use by Unit Leaders in underwriting file reviews and monitoring of production standards. Coordinates specific property program processes including property valuations, Coastal Windstorm Fund, ISO requests and specific rates. Works with IT Liaison to manage and test annual rate changes, develop and maintain rating procedures. Participates in, and may lead, internal teams/task forces. Coordinates and oversees projects to support and enable implementation of underwriting policies and procedures. Suggests areas for improvement in internal processes along with possible solutions. Performs special projects, as assigned

Job Requirements

This position requires a thorough knowledge of underwriting processes, including classification principles, rating, contract administration, workers’ compensation audits, proposal/new business/renewal issuance, property valuations. The successful candidate must have the ability to query information from various sources, analyze and publish resulting data facts in an organized manner. Strong written and verbal communication and listening skills, as well as supervisory training and skills are necessities. The Underwriting Analyst must demonstrate the ability to use independent judgment and initiative, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and management. CPCU or other insurance designation preferred but not required.

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field, preferably with coursework in math and statistical analysis, at least four years progressive experience in commercial property/casualty underwriting with emphasis on property, plus two years of supervisory experience; or the equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
